The Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society’s Northern Illinois Southern Wisconsin Chapter (AAHGS-NISW) was established on November 15, 2003 when a group of family historians, genealogists, and community members came together to conduct the group’s first official meeting. AAHGS-NISW’s mission is to develop a network of individuals with the common goal of advancing towards a greater awareness of African-American heritage and lineage with the vision to empower individuals, families, and communities by increasing knowledge, cultivating self-awareness, enhancing personal growth and pride, and developing identity. The members of AAHGS-NISW believe the past shapes the future; therefore, one must know where he has been to know where he is going. AAHGS-NISW meetings are held the first Saturday of each month from September to May at 2:00 pm at Montague Branch Library in Rockford, Illinois. The group welcomes visitors and new members, and is willing to assist with family research. |
